2019 SMART4SEA Awards

SMART4SEA E-Navigation Award

For its innovative complete vessel performance and passenger monitoring system as well as its Passage Planning Software Module, seeking to reduce PSC deficiencies associated with passage plan, help navigators to create compliant and accurate Passage Plan Documentation, and reduce the amount of time spent on paper shuffling.

Mr. Mike Konstantinidis, CEO, METIS Cybertechnology:

Today more than ever, almost two decades into the 21st century, timing is ideal for the successful implementation of Information Intelligence to address the specific requirements of the Maritime Industry. We need to join forces to solve the big issues for the industry, capitalizing on emerging technologies. NAVTOR is an innovative company offering navigational products improving the life of seafarers and making their job easier, safer and more efficient.

Mr. Tor A. Svanes, CEO, NAVTOR:

We take pride in having developed a solution that is easy to use. Technology can unlock enormous benefits for businesses, but we must never lose sight of the people. This award confirms what our customers have been telling us since we launched the module. Shipping never stands still, and neither does NAVTOR. We will continue to find new solutions, technology and ways of working to make life easier for navigators, and safer, clearer and more efficient for shipowners, ship managers and operators.

SMART4SEA Connectivity Award

For the continuous growth of its global satellite network ‘XChange Cloud’, a digital business optimization tool providing a secure platform for the optimized transfer and synchronization of files between ship and shore, and for its Cyber Guard Suite, the company’s fully integrated Cyber Guard portfolio.

Mr. Soren Vinther Hansen, COO, Vessel Performance Solutions:

To be able to leverage Big Data technology and analyses, we need access to the data streams through reliable connections. We also have a need to have this implemented more in the Shipping Industry. One of the obstacles have been the price of communication and as this is going down, the number of connected vessels is going up. Marlink is a company with an impressive portfolio of solutions that can support all these, optimizing vessel operations for enhanced crew welfare and safety.

Mr. Tore Morten Olsen, President Maritime, Marlink:

Connectivity is the key enabler for Greek and global ship owners to operate smarter and more efficiently. Critically though, satcom can support crews, making their life at sea safer and more comfortable through better leisure facilities, on board training and even health and safety through telemedicine. And fortunately, as the industry continues its path to digitalisation, we are now at the stage where technology is becoming so relevant and useful that shipowners can finally see a real return on their investment.

Shipping is going through change; we see and hear about new technologies, and connected possibilities on an almost daily basis. But while shipping is changing, and technology is advancing, we need to recognize that this is an industry that evolves around human needs and people. In this regard, shipping needs people and in particular, role models that portray the positive development of our industry, such as Peter Broadhurst who has dedicated his career in maritime industry, first at sea as a radio officer, a role which in itself has been replaced by modern technology and then in the rapidly growing maritime communications sector.
