The 2023 GREEN4SEA Athens Forum was successfully concluded on Wednesday, 29th of March at Eugenides Foundation, focusing on ways to accelerate maritime decarbonization and providing the current landscape and challenges of alternative fuels and wind propulsion systems.
This is a PRO BONO/ NON PROFIT event aiming at a target group of more than 700 Delegates / 350 Organizations (Mainly Safety, Technical, Operations, marine departments of Shipping Operators and relevant associated Industry Organizations).

Daiji Aihara, Deputy General Manager of Piraeus Office, ClassNK
After graduating from Osaka Prefecture University with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering in 2004, Mr. Aihara gained a wide range of experience across the ClassNK organization, with activities including plan approval, ship survey, marketing, etc. He took the role of Manager of ClassNK Hull Department until he was assigned to the current position in 2022.
Victor Alessandrini, Business Development Manager, GTT
Civil Engineering graduated, he started in 1989 as structural offshore engineer in Technip and worked in large size projects ending with responsibilities as Lead Discipline. In 1998 he moved to Project Management position where he was entrusted with increasing responsibilities through EPCI projects for major Clients. From 2005 he had business development & sales responsibility within the Offshore Business Unit supporting Special Projects & FLNG activities worldwide, position from where he was involved on whole LNG chain. He joined early 2014 GTT to integrate Business Development team with geographical focus on Korea, Middle East, Greece & Spain and FLNG Product.
Gavin Allwright, Secretary General, International Windship Association (IWSA)
Gavin Allwright is the Secretary General of the International Windship Association (IWSA). Established in 2014, this grouping of maritime wind propulsion companies and projects supported by ship owners, ship builders, class, research institutes, academia, NGO’s and seafarers is working to promote and facilitate the uptake of wind propulsion solutions in commercial shipping. Alongside his work as association secretary, he also leads the policy work stream, requiring regular attendance at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), where IWSA has consultative status, and he sits on the stakeholders advisory committee for the MTCC network there too. Other policy fora include the European Sustainable Shipping Forum, IRENA’s Coalition for Action and numerous reference groups and advisory committees focused on decarbonisation in shipping. Gavin has presented at over 100 international fora, including CMA, SMM & Green Ship Technology along with regularly chairing the Natural Propulsion Seminar as part of Blue Week each year. He was also the coordinator for the ground-breaking ‘Ambition 1.5C: Global Shipping’s Action Plan’ summit at COP23 in Bonn in 2017. His work extends to being a non-executive board member for the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA), a work package leader on the EU Interreg Wind Assist Ship Propulsion (WASP) and advisor on various shipping decarbonisation projects. He is also a regular guest lecturer at the UN World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmo, Sweden among others. Gavin holds a Masters degree in Sustainable Development, specialising in small scale sustainable shipping and logistics in developing countries. He has contributed to numerous studies, projects, books and articles on alternative propulsion solutions and helped coordinate and contributed to the UN-affiliated IRENA technical brief – Renewable Energy Options in Shipping and more recently was an expert reviewer for the IPCC special report on 1.5C climate change.
Rafik Ammar, Manager of Government and Public Affairs in Europe, Methanol Institute
Before joining MI, Mr. Ammar held several positions in EU institutions. He supported political work with a focus on transport in the European Parliament and as a coordinator for interinstitutional relations at the Secretariat General of the European Commission, where he oversaw relations between the European Commission and the Council. Mr. Ammar graduated from the École Nationale d’Administration in France and holds an M.Sc in Business Engineering.
Apo Belokas, Managing Editor, SAFETY4SEA
Apo is the Founder & Managing Director of the SQE Group, including SQE MARINE, SQE ACADEMY, SAFETY4SEA and RISK4SEA. He is a veteran Maritime Safety, Quality & Environmental Expert, Consultant, Trainer and Project Manager with a 30 year background in shipping as Technical, Marine, Safety & Training Superintendent, Consultant and Project Manager. He entered shipping as Engineering Superintendent with a leading ship manager operating a mixed fleet of bulk and oil/chemical tankers and later shifted to regulatory compliance and QHSE specialization as superintendent and later as a Consultant, Trainer and Project Manager. Apostolos has successfully completed a wide range of QHSE projects including 250+ management system projects (ISM/ISPS/ISO 9001-14001-18001/TMSA/MLC/DBMS), 500 vessel and office audits to various standards and he has trained more than 10,000 people in a wide variety of QHSE and Shipping related subjects. He is holding Mechanical Engineering Bachelor and Master’s specializing in Energy & Environment and Master’s Degrees in Maritime Business and Business Administration (MBA). Apostolos is the founder and Managing Editor of SAFETY4SEA that produces a wide range of paper magazines, the globally leading portal in Safety & Environmental protection for shipping (www.safety4sea.com) and numerous large scale events and he is a frequent speaker in many events across the globe, while he has chaired more than 70 large scale forums so far. Constantinos Chaelis, Global Gas Markets & Technology Lead, Lloyd’s Register
Constantinos Chaelis has been with Lloyd’s Register for 9 years and currently holds the position of Global Gas Markets & Technology Lead, based in Athens Greece. His primary focus is echoing the strategic direction in maritime gas supply chains towards the sustainable growth of the gas segment, engaging with technological developments in gas commodity markets and steering the enhancement of LR service portfolio to the shipping community. In the past he held the position of Project Manager & Marine Surveyor for new construction and existing ships in operation for LR, acquiring robust technical expertise in various global placements including UK, Spain, Italy, Poland, South Korea. Prior experience further enhanced working in the technical management of a tanker fleet for a Greek shipping company. He represents LR in gas associations including the Global Gas Centre, World LPG Association and SEA-LNG. Since 2012 he has represented LR in several projects, conferences and LR Technical Committees. Constantinos holds an MEng in Naval Architecture from the University of Southampton, UK and a Chartered Engineer (CEng) status by the British Council. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (MICS) and a member of the RINA & IMarEST.
Fotis N. Dalmyras, CEO, Andriaki Shipping Co. Ltd
Fotis Dalmyras, Naval Architect, seamlessly involved with ships technical management since 2000. In 2019 he joined Andriaki Shipping Co. Ltd in the position of Technical Director, while in July 2021 he was promoted to the position of CEO. He holds a MSc in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering by the National Technical University of Athens and a post-graduate MBA by Alba Graduate Business School. Fotis was born in Athens in 1973, where he lives with his wife and two children.
Theodosia Digalaki, Technical Product Manager, ERMA FIRST
Theodosia Digalaki joined ERMA FIRST in 2018 as a Senior Electrical Engineer and is currently the Technical Product Manager of ERMA FIRST BLUE CONNECT. She is responsible for the engineering and development of shore power solution leading the engineering team. Her career began in 2008, in shore industry while working at Alcon Engineering Consultants. During her 10 years’ experience in shore sector, she was responsible for the design and implementation of complex electrical systems. She was also responsible for managing high scaled projects from conception to completion. She holds a Master’s degree in International Shipping, Finance and Management form Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) on top of her Electrical and Computer Engineering degree from University of Patras.
Tom Evensen, Regional Category Manager Hull Performance – WESCA, Jotun
Tom H Evensen is a former officer in the Royal Norwegian Navy. He served as Chief of Supplies on a coastguard vessel and has spent 5 seasons at sea. Having studied in Norway, Germany and the US he holds a Master of Science in Business and Economics. After graduation he joined Northern Europe’s largest consultancy company, Tieto. His primary focus being projects related to IT-systems development. He then moved into telecommunications, working as Export Manager for a company producing various accessories related to the mobile industry. Prior to his career in Jotun he worked for 7 years as Regional Sales Manager for a company within the building and construction industry. In 2009 he joined Jotun as Product Manager for the SeaQuantum range, then progressed to Group Category Manager for the Antifouling department and in 2011 he joined the Hull Performance Solutions team as Sales Director. In early 2018 he was assigned the role as Deputy Project Manager for the Hull Skating Solutions project (HSS) and held that position until the solution was launched in May 2020. In early 2021 he took on the position as the Regional Category Manager Hull Performance for Western Europe and Scandinavia.
Dr. Konstantinos Galanis, Chairman, International Ship Recycling Association
Dr Konstantinos Galanis has over 30 years of professional & academic experience. In Jan 2020 he was elected as Chairman of the International Ship Recycling Association. He is a Director at Dido Shipping Company S.A. and held senior positions at shipping companies including one publicly listed at Nasdaq, USA. He is a Lecturer at the Institute of Charterer Shipbrokers, Hellenic Branch teaching Maritime Economics. He serves MIT as Educational Counselor and he is the Founder of Shipping for Kids. He has also served for 8 years’ onboard ships and has taught for several years courses related to Naval Architecture & Marine Hydrodynamics. He is a member of ABS European Technical and ClassNK Greek Technical Committees. He has published several papers at International Journals, Conferences and events and has written several technical reports and projects. Konstantinos holds three graduate degrees from MIT, namely PhD in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering and Applied Mechanics, M.Sc. in Ocean Systems Management and B.Sc. in Naval Engineering.
Antonios Georgantzis, Chief Operating Officer, Latsco Marine Management Inc.
Antonios Georgantzis is a Naval Architect and Marine Engineer, graduated from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and has Master of Science in Naval Architecture and Marine Technology. He worked in Classification Society Det Norske Veritas, on assignments in Greece, Norway and South Korea. On 2006 he joined Consolidated Marine Management Inc. as Assistant Site Manager in New Building construction in Ulsan. On 2008, he joined CMM office in Piraeus and he held a number of different positions (Technical Superintendent, DPA & HSQEEn Manager, Technical Fleet Manager, Technical Manager), until having been assigned with the COO responsibilities of Latsco Marine Management Inc., the Technical Operator of Latsco Shipping in Greece, on June 2021. He is member of INTERTANKO’s ISTEC and an Ex Vice Chairman of INTERTANKO’s Environmental Committee, as well as a member in SIGTTO GPC Committee, Lloyd’s Register, DNV, ABS and Bureau Veritas Technical Committees, and Vice Chairman in MARTECMA’s Council.
Dr. Edmund Hughes, Director, Green Marine Associates
Dr Hughes is Director of Green Marine Associates Ltd. an independent consultancy based in the UK specialising in maritime policy development, regulatory implementation and risk management with a focus on the control of emissions from ships. His current work includes working as a Specialist Adviser to the UK Parliament’s House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee for its inquiry into ‘Net zero aviation and shipping’.Previously, Dr Hughes was Head, Air Pollution and Energy Efficiency in the Marine Environment Division of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). As a member of the IMO Secretariat his responsibilities covered MARPOL Annex VI, the International Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships, including regulations on controlling emissions to air including IMO 2020 and energy efficiency for ships. He was also responsible for IMO’s work to address GHG emissions from international shipping which included the development and adoption of the Initial IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG emissions from ships. Prior to joining the IMO, Dr Hughes worked in the UK civil service for some eight years. This included six years at the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), where he held policy roles in safety management (ISM Code) and environment (Ballast Water Management and Air Pollution) including preparing and overseeing the implementation into UK law of IMO and EU instruments: MARPOL Annex VI and EU Sulphur Directive respectively. When in the UK civil service Dr Hughes spent two years in HM Treasury, the UK’s Finance and Economics Ministry, where he worked on risk management and corporate governance for the public sector. Before joining the civil service he worked in academia researching engineering design and systems failure at the University of Bath. He has a PhD and an engineering degree from Cranfield University in the UK.
Dr. John Kokarakis, Technical Director South East Europe, Black Sea & Adriatic (SEEBA) Zone, Bureau Veritas
Dr Kokarakis a 1979 graduate of National Technical University of Athens, holds PhD (1986) and Masters degrees in Naval Architecture (1983) and Mechanical Engineering (1984) from the University of Michigan. He worked for over ten years as a consultant undertaking technical problems worldwide. His specialization was in the area of technical investigation of marine accidents. In his capacity as a forensic engineer he participated in the technical investigation of the Exxon Valdez grounding, the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, the drillship Sea-Crest capsize, the Piper Alpha fire and explosion, the Aleutian Enterprise foundering in Alaska as well as many other accidents of less notoriety. In addition, he was a technical consultant for SEALAND, APL, MATSON Navigation, Chevron and other companies. The last twenty years he works in Greece, in the area of classification. Having served in the plan approval office of American Bureau of Shipping in Piraeus, he then joined Germanischer Lloyd heading their tanker and bulk carrier team in Greece. He is currently the Technical Director of Bureau Veritas in the Hellenic and Black Sea & Adriatic Zone. In his duties Dr. Kokarakis is responsible for the smooth technical operation in the Zone as well as in the harmonic cooperation with the BV offices worldwide to the benefit of the BV clients. He is a member of SNAME since 1976 and a Fellow of the Society. He is currently the Chairman of the Greek Section since 2014. He has also served as International Vice President of the Society and a Member of the Fellows Committee.
Costas Kontes, Managing Director, V.Group
Costas Kontes has been working as a Managing Director for V.Ships Greece Ltd. since 2016 while he has been previously serving as Business Development Manager for V. Group since 2008. He is responsible for the office in Greece and for operating a large fleet of Container and Bulk Carrier vessels. Previously he has been serving the Cruise / Leisure sector, working for Iberojet Cruceros. Being responsible for the Marine and Technical operations, Costas has set up the operation in Madrid for the company later on to expand from 1 to 3 owned ships and later on sold to a large cruise line. Other positions held previously were with Martinoli SAM in Monaco following the fleet of Renaissance Cruises being involved on the successful initial launching of Oceania Cruises, as well as working for Festival Cruises both onboard the ships and on the newbuildings in France. He has a BSc, MSc in Marine Engineering from Newcastle University Upon Tyne and a MSc in Shipping, Trade and Finance from Cass Business School. Later additional qualification was the attendance of Seatrade Cruise Masterclass course and the Executive Leadership Development Course designed for V.Group from Strathclyde Business School while holding the title of the Chartered Engineer from the British Engineering Council. Costas has served 6 years at The International Propeller Club Port of Piraeus as a governor out of which the two years served as Secretary General and is currently in his 3rd year as Vice President.
Mr. Takis Koutris, Managing Director, Roxana Shipping SA
Takis Koutris is Naval Architect & Marine and Mechanical Engineer M.Sc. In October 1980, he graduated from the National Technical University of Athens, where he studied Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering. After his graduation, he was employed in Alfa Laval (1983-1984) and then in Avin International SA (1984-2000) and Athenian Tankers (2000-2001). Since 2001, he is Managing Director in ROKS Maritime Inc – Roxana Shipping SA
Prof. Dimitrios V. Lyridis, School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, NTUA, Director of the Laboratory for Maritime Transport
Dimitrios V. Lyridis is an Associate Professor in the area of Maritime Transport in the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NA&ME) at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He is currently Director of the Laboratory for Maritime Transport (LMT) of NTUA. He has a Diploma in NA&ME from NTUA, an M.S. in NA&ME (Marine Systems Management) from the University of Michigan (UM), an M.S.E. in Industrial and Operations Engineering (IOE) from UM, and a Ph.D. in NA&ME from UM as well. His main scientific areas of interest are maritime economics, supply chain management, shipping finance, maritime transportation, energy economics, and environment. He has undertaken many research and industrial projects in these areas (including project finance and cost benefit analyses for investment projects) and he has been involved in applied commercial projects in the areas of ship investment, restructuring, marketing, business and operational planning (including feasibility studies and business plans).
Madadh MacLaine, Secretary General, Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association
Madadh MacLaine is a visionary entrepreneur working in sustainability and the maritime sector. She is the Founder and CEO of Zero Emissions Maritime Technology Ltd (ZEM-Tech) Secretary-General of the Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs), co-founder of the International Windships Association (IWSA), as well as Founder Director of the sustainable development NGO, Fair Winds Trust. She has a background in hydrogen water electrolysis and maritime systems, having represented ITM Power, plc, in the maritime industry. Madadh has been working in zero-emissions shipping since she began designs for a ZE multi-access cargo ship in 2000. Frustrated by the lack of available technology, she set off on a course to bring ZE Ship Technology to the market. She founded ZESTAs to promote the interests of the Zero Emissions Ship Technology Industry in 2019. The goals of ZESTAs are to support ZE Technology development, represent its interests in the international shipping industry and regulatory bodies, and ensure a level playing field for Zero Emissions Ship Technologies, as well as shipowners, who are coming under increasing pressure to decarbonize their fleets. ZESTAs has recently been granted consultative statuse at the IMO.
Ross Millar, Loss Prevention Associate, Steamship Mutual
Ross is a trained Master Mariner with over 18 years’ shipping experience and holds an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering with Aeronautics from Glasgow University. His education gives him a remarkable insight into vessel operations. Ross has been invited to speak at numerous global shipping events and participates in all manner of events on industry-related issues as a speaker, panellist, and presenter. Before joining the Club, he worked for a prominent city law firm specialising in marine casualty investigation and contentious litigation. He has handled collisions, groundings, fire, major loss of life, salvage, and cargo claims. His maritime experience includes ferry, offshore, and cruise vessel operations. Ross later served as a Master on Ro-Pax vessels with a well-known ferry operator and prior to moving to London held a Pilotage position at a busy harbour. During this time, he completed over 900 acts of Pilotage on various vessels, gaining a solid understanding of ship handling on a range of different vessel types.
Mats Norling, Technical Sales & Business Development Manager, SKF
Mats Norling started his career as a Chief Engineer within the Royal Swedish Marine, on various patrol vessels and mine laying vessel. This involved all systems onboard for propulsion, power generation, deck cranes etc, with high degree of maintenance. As Superintendent for 2 domestic ferry operators, work included new build of a passenger vessel, replacement of propulsion system with azimuth thrusters on 6 car ferries and a total rebuild of 2 car ferries with extension, new superstructure and new design of propulsion system. Going back to oil maintenance by entering as CEO for Europafilter, was with a return to maintenance in a time when asset management started to become more important and today it has been clear that oil is an asset, and with the use of the solutions from SKF Recondoil that acquired Europafilter some 2 years ago this is now enabling circularity of oils. Mats’ main duty within SKF is to develop the business process for this, and has an reference base from all industries, marine and oil & gas on/off-shore with a strong passion for enabling the true circular use of oil.
Peter Quaade, Manager, Head of Dual Fuel Technology group, MAN Energy Solutions, 2-Stroke Operation / Engineering
Mr. Quaade is Head of Duel Fuel Technology group, Two Stroke Operation and he has been working with MAN ES duel fuel engines since introduction in 2012.
Prof. Dr-Ing Orestis Schinas, Scientific Advisor, HHX.blue
Orestis has more 25 years of experience in the maritime industry and has widely contributed in research and specialized projects too. Before joining HHX.blue, Schinas was the Professor of Shipping & Ship Finance and Head of the Maritime Business School at the Hamburg School of Business Administration (HSBA – www.hsba.de), since 2008.. His professional career includes large corporate assignments, such as IPO and advanced research and business development projects, as well as start-ups and fintech endeavors in the fields of shipping and ship finance. He has gained experiences and offered his services in many sectors, regions and international organizations, and recently he was also appointed as Permanent Representative of a Member State to IMO. His work on marine bunkers, air emissions and energy efficiency of ships as well as on ports and infrastructure is published in renowned journals and collective works, while his book ‘HSBA Handbook on Ship Finance’ is also available in Chinese, reflecting the visibility of his work.
Maria Tsompanoglou, Performance Manager, Pantheon Tankers Management Ltd
Maria Tsompanoglou holds the position of Energy Performance Manager at Pantheon Tankers, Alpha Bulkers and Alpha Gas since July 2018, heading the responsible department for the performance monitoring and environmental compliance of more than 70 vessels, the majority of which are equipped with high frequency data-acquisition systems. Prior to her current role, she worked at Minerva Marine Inc for 21 years in the performance engineering and new building projects sections and as Head of Energy Efficiency. Proficient in energy efficiency and environmental compliance issues, with experience in technical tasks, she has been responsible for a number of new buildings & other technical projects, including scrubbers and performance monitoring and engine diagnostic applications. Maria holds a Master’s degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens and a Master’s Degree in Maritime Studies from the University of Piraeus.
Luisa Puccio, Director Shipping & Trade Policy, European Community Shipowner’s Association
Luisa Puccio is Director for Shipping and Trade Policy at the European Community Shipowners’ Associations, which represents 20 national associations of shipowners from the EU and the EEA. Luisa joined ECSA in 2020 where she is responsible for all topics related to the competiveness of the industry, among others transport and logistics policy, trade and market access. Prior to joining ECSA, Luisa has worked in Brussels-based consultancies dealing with EU policy, with a specific focus on shipping policy, sustainability and circular economy. She holds a Master’s degree in public policy and government relations from Bocconi University in Milan.
Andrew Stephens, Executive Director, Sustainable Shipping Initiative
Andrew has a long international background in the maritime industry, working as Chief Operating Officer for leading companies such as Wilhelmsen Ships Service and Wallem Group before joining the Sustainable Shipping Initiative, as Executive Director, in August 2018.

· An expanded work programme and industry engagement, addressing systemic sustainability issues in shipping
· An updated roadmap to guide the industry on its journey to sustainability across six vision areas, emphasising the need for sustainability to be holistic
· Growth in members across the maritime ecosystem, including the first port member of the initiative, Port of Vancouver, as well as expansion of SSI’s NGO members, bringing in the human rights expertise of the Institute for Human Rights and Business (IHRB)
· An updated strategy to take SSI to 2025, catalysing change: by supporting the leading companies to act, tracking and challenging the industry’s progress in ways that stimulate and accelerate action on specific emerging issues, and providing additional opportunities for interested organisations to get involved in SSI’s work
Emmanuel Vergetis ,Liaison in Greece-Marine Consultant, Intercargo
Emmanuel Vergetis is a graduate of National Technical University of Athens and holds a degree of Naval and Mechanical Engineer. He has served in various positions in the Marine Industry and has also gained extensive experience in the EPC and Renewable Energy Sector. Following his previous capacity in Lloyds Register he joined the International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners as Liaison in Greece and marine consultant in January 2022.
Nikos Xydas, Technical Director, World LPG Association
Nikos Xydas is the Technical Director of WLPGA, the World LPG Association in Paris and of AEGPL, the European LPG Association in Brussels. Holding an M.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Scotland, he started his professional career with ABB in Switzerland, before moving to Shell in Greece and then abroad, to cover international positions in Technical, Operations, HSSE and Strategy, in the sectors of LPG, Retail and Lubricants. Mr Xydas holds a double Greek / French nationality and he lives in Paris.
Maria Vitoratou Zisimatou, Maritime Decarbonisation Athens Centre Senior Specialist, Team Leader, Lloyd’s Register
Maria Vitoratou Zisimatou is a Naval Architect and Marine Engineer from the National Technical University of Athens with an MBA in Shipping from ALBA. She has started her career in 2018 with Lloyd’s Register plan approval department and from 2021 she works for the LR Advisory services, managing a team which supports clients with the regulatory decarbonization framework such as the EEXI, CII, EVDI and the relevant EU requirements

American Steamship Owners Mutual Protection and Indemnity Association, Inc. (the American Club) was established in New York in 1917. It is the only mutual Protection and Indemnity Club domiciled in the United States – indeed, in the entire Americas. The Club is a member of the International Group of P&I Clubs, a collective of thirteen mutuals which together provide Protection and Indemnity insurance for some 90% of all world shipping. Protection and Indemnity insurance (commonly referred to as “P&I”) provides cover to shipowners and charterers against third-party liabilities encountered in their commercial operations. Responsibility for damage to cargo, for pollution, for the death, injury or illness of passengers or crew and for damage to docks and other installations are examples of typical exposures. Running in parallel with a ship’s hull and machinery cover, traditional P&I such as that offered by the American Club distinguishes itself from ordinary forms of marine insurance by being based on the not-for-profit principle of mutuality where Members of the Club are both the insurers and the assureds.
ARCADIA SHIPMANAGEMENT CO. LTD
Arcadia Shipmanagement Co. LTD was established in Athens in 1998 with a clear strategic goal – “the safe transportation of cargoes worldwide with respect to the environment”. Initially the Company assumed the management of two different types of vessels (dry and wet) but at a later stage ARCADIA, realizing the increased demands and responsibilities of the current times, focused its activities on tanker management. Following the Company’s establishment in 1998, an ambitious investment program began with the construction of high specification aframax and suezmax tankers, in South Korean Yards, on behalf of Companies that had entrusted the management of their vessels to ARCADIA.
Blue Planet Shipping Ltd
Blue Planet Shipping Ltd (BPS) was established and based at Piraeus since 1996, to manage 8 Dry Bulk Carriers. In 1998, BPS split into two separate companies. BPS retained its root name and Third Millenium Shipping Ltd (TMS) was set up to manage vessels for different owners. BPS managed 7 out of the 8 vessels; (AKMI – ARIS – EVMAR – COSMAR – ALMAVITA – AFROS & ALKIMOS) and the management of the ASTROMAR was undertaken by TMS. In 2002, clients of the company placed an order for 6 New Building Supramax vessels in China, of which 5 were delivered in 2003 and 1 in 2004. The new vessels (APOLLON – APEX – AKMI – EVNIA – NICOLAOS A and AVRA) were registered under Cyprus and Greek Flags. With the company by then managing a total of 14 vessels, it began recruiting different nationalities to man the ships, focusing mainly on Greek, Ukrainian, Burmese and Moroccan crews.

Eastern Mediterranean Maritime Limited (EASTMED)
EASTMED is a ships management company with head offices in Glyfada (Athens), Greece. Presently the company has under management 78 vessels, employs 200 shore based personnel and a further 3000 seagoing staff. The fleet comprises of 29 tankers, 39 dry bulk carriers and 10 container ships, adding up to a total DWT capacity of 7.2 million tons. Principally both the tankers and the dry cargo vessels are employed on the spot market and occasionally will enter into short period charter agreements on a number of ships of the fleet.
The following overseas companies are employed as exclusive agents of EASTMED:
· Intermar Chartering (UK) Ltd. in London, U.K.: Covers the London chartering market.
· Eastern Mediterranean Manning Agency in Manila, Philippines: Directly selects, trains, and employs Filipino Masters, Officers, and Crew exclusively for the vessels under EASTMED’s management.
EASTMED was granted by Lloyd’s the ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certification in December 2010 and is in the process of being certified with ISO 50001 within 2016. EASTMED is presently a member of BIMCO, INTERTANKO and INTERCARGO, thus joining forces for improved standards in the industry. EASTMED voluntarily participates to AMVER reporting system, operated by the US Coast Guard for promoting safety of life and property at sea. Managed vessels are honored with AMVER awards on an annual basis.

2023 GREEN4SEA Athens Forum: How industry navigates the complex legislative landscape towards decarbonization
The 2023 GREEN4SEA Athens Forum successfully took place on Wednesday, 29th of March at Eugenides Foundation, Athens, Greece. The event focused on ways to accelerate maritime decarbonization, providing the current landscape and challenges of alternative fuels and propulsion systems being developed as well as recent regulatory updates and their impact on industry’s journey towards a more sustainable future.

Panel #1: Sustainable Shipping
Andrew Stephens, Executive Director, Sustainable Shipping Initiative, highlighted that shipping needs a responsible, sustainable decarbonization, that takes into consideration the different externalities created in the development of new fuels and technologies. He spoke about the importance of avoiding ‘carbon tunnel vision’ and addressing sustainable shipping systemically, ensuring that we can better champion all stakeholders – from seafarers to port communities to our oceans and future generations.”
Madadh MacLaine, Secretary General, Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs), provided a technical overview of zero emissions technologies and projects. In particular, she presented the existing and future hydrogen vessels and referred to green hydrogen production and bunkering infrastructure and the hydrogen bunkering systems. She also mentioned the existing and future wind propulsion systems, energy efficiency technologies and ways to integrate more zero emissions technologies in the future.
Luisa Puccio, Director of Shipping & Trade Policy at European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA) closed the first panel with a presentation on EU’s latest developments on shipping decarbonization under the Fit for 55 package. She also pointed out the importance of the inclusion of shipping in the EU ETS and the new Fuel EU maritime regulation. She finished her speech on the topic of upcoming developments.
Panel #2: Decarbonization Challenges
Dr. Edmund Hughes, Director, Green Marine Associates, kicked off the first panel’s presentations by presenting key issues to be considered on the Revision of the IMO GHG Strategy at MEPC 80. He briefly mentioned the current status of IMO negotiations and provided an overview of proposed technical and economic measures being considered by IMO. Finally, he discussed several existing and future measures, as well as ways to encourage the uptake of alternative low-/zero-carbon fuels.
Dimitrios V. Lyridis, Associate Professor at National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), highlighted that ports, being part of the transport supply chain and key energy hubs, have a large part of the energy burden and are therefore potentially part of a zero-carbon solution. In that regard, he presented several alternative technological and operational solutions that are necessary for a holistic and optimized road map to a green shipping era.
Emmanuel Vergetis, INTERCARGO liaison / Consultant, gave a presentation on the various challenges the dry bulk and tramp shipping are facing as we are heading toward the maritime decarbonization. He also stated that all parties involved in the maritime venture should bear the costs of the decarbonization transition and play their part in order to create a realistic pathway and address the challenges of decarbonization.
Lastly, Maria Vitoratou Zisimatou, Maritime Decarbonisation Athens Centre Senior Specialist and Team Leader at Lloyd’s Register, presented various decarbonization initiatives and the role they play in the industry. She pointed out that ship owners are being faced with the complex & dynamic challenge to reduce emissions across their assets while the changing statutory regime from the IMO and EU is driving the energy transition. She concluded her presentation with different approaches that can help shipping companies reduce their uncertainty about the future.
Panel #3: New Era – Experience Transfer
Ross Millar, Loss Prevention Associate, Steamship Mutual, presented the evolution of alternative fuels from the P&I Club perspective. The maritime sector is currently evaluating a range of alternative fuels to replace conventional fuels, each with their own set of advantages—and drawbacks. In this regard, industry stakeholders need assistance and information to make wise decisions on their path to decarbonization and steer clear of any claims that could materially affect their P&I coverage.
Konstantinos Galanis, Chairman, International Ship Recycling Association, pointed out that ship recycling is not a stand-alone industry. He noted that organizations should be empowered to foster collaborative thinking to further drive waste management by applying safe processes and utilizing innovation. He believes that by closing the loop and leveraging agile frameworks, business will grow organically and foster society’s mindset.
Dr-Ing Orestis Schinas, Scientific Advisor, HHX.blue, briefly outlined the provisos and impacts on shipping of sustainable finance, Poseidon Principles and EU Taxonomy, which are currently major developments in Europe’s financial markets. As he explained, sustainable finance refers to the process of taking environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations into account when making investment decisions in the financial sector, leading to more long-term investments in sustainable economic activities and projects.
Panel #4: Ship Performance
Tom Evensen, Regional Category Manager Hull Performance – WESCA, Jotun, highlighted that the shipping industry strives for optimum hull performance, driven by the never-ending need for performance improvement, reduced emissions and reduced the risk of transfer of aquatic invasive species. In that regard, ship operators must significantly reduce time to decision and most importantly, time to action by adopting practices that can save potential and gradually move them from a reactive scheme towards a more proactive approach.
Maria Tsompanoglou, Performance Manager, Pantheon Tankers Management Ltd, presented energy-saving technologies and their impact on the EEXI & CII for large tankers and bulk carriers. The presentation explored the most widely known energy-saving technologies that are already widespread in the market and have proven their effectiveness: pre-swirl stators, PBCFs and low-friction coatings. The savings potential of their combinations and their impact on EEXI and CII ratings were briefly discussed, and attention was focused particularly on the provided potential to CII compliance over time.
Mats Norling, Technical Sales & Business Development Manager, SKF, mentioned ways to enable what he called the true circular use of oil. He noted that oil as consumable is used, discarded, and replaced. With a specific technology that uses a combination of chemical and mechanical separation. Oil can be reused and create value across operations, providing the following benefits: sustainability and performance improvement as well as total oil cost reduction.
Theodosia Digalaki, Technical Product Manager, ERMA FIRST, shared her perspective on reducing carbon footprint with shore power. She presented technical information about the necessary infrastructure on both the port and vessel sides and referred to the benefits of shore power and how it can have a direct impact on reducing emissions and optimize ports’ climate. She also gave a brief overview of the global regulatory framework, emphasized the importance of safety and ways to improve it.
Panel #5: Future Fuel Options
Dr. John Kokarakis, Technical Director South East Europe, Black Sea & Adriatic (SEEBA) Zone at Bureau Veritas, noted that ammonia will be more utilized as a carrier of hydrogen in a future hydrogen ecosystem while the synthetic ammonia appears to be attractive because carbon capture is not required. Although ammonia is promulgated as one of the fuels in the future multi-fuel society, a major stumbling block is the IGC Code of IMO which prevents the carriage and utilization of toxic fuels, he said.
Victor Alessandrini, Business Development Manager at GTT, focused his presentation on LNG as a fuel. He mentioned the latest LNG fueled ship deliveries and ongoing LNG fueled projects with new challenges, highlighting that more than 800 LNG fueled ships will be sailing by 2025. As design flexibility is important, their focus is on saving space and cargo for all ship types and find innovative solutions to maximize flexibility and performance.
Rafik Ammar, Manager of Government and Public Affairs in Europe, Methanol Institute, mentioned how the Methanol Institute engage policymakers and stakeholders to make the green deal a reality and talked about methanol as a marine fuel. In particular, he explained how methanol can move industry forward as an alternative fuel concerning the EU regulations (FuelEU and Maritime ETS) and IMO’s targets and he also referred to the availability and benefits of e/biomethanol.
Panel #6: Wind as an option
Gavin Allwright, Secretary General, International Windship Association (IWSA), provided an overview of wind propulsion and the path to zero-emissions. He began his presentation by debunking myths around wind propulsion in shipping and then focused on where the market is now and where it is headed as shipping accelerates its path to decarbonization. Wind propulsion has been extensively researched, tested, discussed, piloted and by some, dismissed throughout the last decade, he highlighted.
Daiji Aihara, Deputy General Manager, ClassNK’s Piraeus Office, referred to activities related to Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS). As explained, ClassNK provides guidelines for the safe design of WAPS, which have been recently updated based on recent expertise to improve clarity, comprehensiveness, and level of detail. By offering appropriate standards, drawing reviews, and survey services, ClassNK aims to support the smooth implementation of these systems and contribute for decarbonizing ship operations.
Panel #7: LPG as an option
Nikos Xydas, Technical Director of the World LPG Association, highlighted that LPG as a marine fuel is a better choice among the other fuel options from a well-to-wake perspective. LPG has better environmental GHG benefits than other alternative and renewable fuels and LNG while LPG Technology Readiness level for ocean energy is at the highest level. LPG is ready now and a capable solution by 2035. What is more, bio and synthetic sources of LPG and renewable DME can offer a long-term pathway.
Constantinos Chaelis, Global Gas Markets & Technology Lead, Lloyd’s Register, displayed a market outlook update on the LPG and ammonia gas value chains. He explored the current landscape of LPG as fuel and discussed its prospects and opportunities as a transition portfolio, addressing also key upcoming projects such as a VLGC of the Future and Ammonia carrier scalability. He concluded his presentation with technology pathways for future-proof designs.
Peter Quaade, Manager, Head of Dual Fuel Technology group, MAN Energy Solutions, presented the benefits that a ME-LGIP engine offers, such as supporting the use of LPG for propulsion of large merchant marine vessels, giving also potential for global bunkering network as smaller LPG carriers can be used for STS bunker operations. These are designed to be dual fuelled with LPG as the low-flashpoint fuel, he explained.
Antonios Georgantzis, Chief Operating Officer at Latsco Marine Management Inc, provided an overview of his company’s journey to a more sustainable future using LPG and presented his company LPG fleet discussing the evolution of the reliquification design of their VLGCs. He highlighted that LPG Fuel can be used as cargo or fuel as it suits charterers needs and concluded with potential retrofit considerations for LPG Dual Fuel.
Panel #8: Ship Managers Perspectives
The last panel of the forum focused on the recent updates of IMO/EU Air Emissions legislation and next steps to move forward, highlighting that stakeholder communication and collaboration are key in industry’s journey towards sustainable shipping. The panel, moderated by Mr. Apostolos Belokas, Managing Editor, SAFETY4EA, included interesting perspectives from the following experts: Dr. John Kokarakis, Technical Director South East Europe, Black Sea & Adriatic (SEEBA) Zone, Bureau Veritas; Fotis N.
