Apostolos BelokasApostolos Belokas is a Maritime Safety, Quality & Environmental Expert, Consultant, Trainer and Project Manager with more than 20 year background in shipping as Technical, Marine, Safety & Training Superintendent and Consultant. He entered the industry back in 1992 as Engineering Superintendent with a leading ship manager operating a mixed fleet of bulk and oil/chemical tankers and later shifted to regulatory compliance and QHSE issues as superintendent and later as a Consultant and Trainer. Apostolos has successfully completed a wide range of QHSE projects including 250+ management system projects (ISM/ISO 9001-14001-18001/TMSA/MLC), 500 vessel and office audits to various standards and he has trained more than 5,000 people in a wide variety of QHSE subjects. He is holding Mechanical Engineering Bachelor and Master’s specialising in Energy & Environment and Master’s Degrees in Maritime Business and Business Administration (MBA), all of them awarded with distinction. Apostolos is the Managing Director of SQE MARINE & SQE ACADEMY and he is also the Founder and Managing Editor of SAFETY4SEA and GREEN4SEA.

Stamatis Fradelos, ABS Principal Engineer

Stamatis FradelosStamatis Fradelos is Principal Engineer in the Operational Environmental Performance (OEP) department of American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). The OEP department provides technical support on energy efficiency, vessel performance and environmental matters. Prior to joining ABS, Stamatis worked as a marine field surveyor and spent six years at Lloyd’s Register as a Plan Approval Surveyor. Stamatis has a M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering (NTUA), a M.Sc. in Marine Technology and Science (NTUA) and a M.Sc. in Engineering – Economic Systems (NTUA, UoA, UoP).

 

Dimitris Dedepsidis ,M.Sc.Eng., Customer Service Manager (Greece), Principal Engineer – Ship Type Expert B/C, DNV GL – Maritime

Dedepsidis_Dimitris Dedepsidis, is a Customer Service Manager & Ship Type Expert for Bulk Carriers of DNV GL Piraeus. Graduated on 1992 from National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) with an M.Sc.Eng at Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. After a fruitful 6-years working experience in major consulting and shipping companies, has devoted to Class Societies Services since 1998. Dimitris has worked at American Bureau of Shipping and Germanischer Lloyd, mainly in plan-approval and service-delivery assignments. Since 2006 is holding leading and managing positions, with primary focus in problem-solving and client-support. Currently in DNV GL, is part of the Regional Business Development team and the Global Network of Ship Type Experts.

Dimitrios Tsoulos, Regional Sales Manager , Evoqua Water Technologies

TsoulosDimitris Tsoulos combines a strong technical know-how with a solid business background and proven work experience within a multinational organization.

Dimitris professional experience as a Head of the Water Technologies Business Unit complemented significantly his technical knowledge and provided him with an excellent know-how about business aspects, P&L management, sales techniques, account management, marketing, organizational behavior, business ethics, negotiations, risk mitigation, people management, accounting and finance principles, that helped him to take over and successfully conduct many challenging business tasks and projects.

With responsibility and commitment Dimitris has recently led the Greek Water Technologies Business Unit through a divestment from Siemens, maintaining minimal impact from carve-out activities and safeguarding business continuity. Currently he is acting as Managing Director of the Evoqua Water Technologies Ltd – Greek Branch and he is responsible for the Electocatalytic Products, Systems and Services for the regional Oil & Gas, Power and Marine market. Electrocatalytic is a leading provider of commercial, industrial, municipal and residual water/waste water treatment systems in more than 100 countries.

Konstantinos Dimopoulos, Technical Marketing Executive, ERMA FIRST S.A.

Dimopoulos_Konstantinos Dimopoulos is a Mechanical Engineer with a MBA (Master in Business administration) and specialization in the energy field. He has extended experience in high pressure hydraulic systems (filtration, fluids treatment, etc.), industrial systems design and engineering as he has worked in one of the leading companies in fluid technology, has attended multiple seminars and conducted several researches. He joined ERMA FIRST S.A. in early 2015 as a Technical Marketing Engineer and he is responsible for the technical sales support, vessels surveys and provides assistance to the development of the existing systems.

Dr. Efi Tsolaki is an Environmental Engineer and holds PhD in Ballast Water Systems. Efi as the first academic with specialization in Ballast Water joined ERMA FIRST in early 2010. From the beginning of her career was focused on the Development and then Certification of the system. She primarily acts as the Scientific Officer of the company with main responsibility the Certification. Following her successful completion of the certification of both ERMA FIRST BWT systems, she in responsible for the ongoing USCG Type Approval process.

John Kokarakis, VP Technology & Business Development, Hellenic Black Sea Region & Middle East, Bureau Veritas

KokarakisJohn KokarakisJohn Emmanuel Kokarakis, a 1979 graduate of National Technical University of Athens, holds PhD (1986) and Master’s degrees in Naval Architecture (1983) and Master’s in Mechanical Engineering (1984) from the University of Michigan. He worked for over ten years as a consultant undertaking technical problems worldwide. His specialization was in the area of technical investigation and analysis of marine accidents. In that capacity he participated in the technical investigation of the Exxon Valdez grounding, capsize of drillship Seacrest, Piper Alpha fire and explosion, Aleutian Enterprise foundering in Alaska as well as many other accidents of less notoriety. The last fourteen years he works in Greece, in the area of classification. He has served at American Bureau of Shipping and Germanischer Lloyd. He worked in plan approval, rule development and implementation of environmental regulations. He is currently Vice President of Technology and Business Development of Marine Hellenic, Black Sea & Middle East Zone at Bureau Veritas. In his duties Dr. Kokarakis is responsible for the smooth technical operation in the Zone as well as in the harmonic cooperation with the BV offices worldwide to the benefit of the BV clients.

Konstantinos Stampedakis, General Director at ERMA FIRST ESK Engineering Solutions S.A

StampedakisKonstantinos is Chemical and Process Engineer, graduate of the University of Surrey. Having completed his post-graduate studies (Master in Science in Water and Environmental Engineering) and having acquired further academic experiences as a temporary academic assistant at the university, he began his career in Thames Water Ltd, in the sector of waste and potable water management. Returning to Greece, he joined ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION ENGINEERING S.A. as the Director of Research, Development and Engineering Department.

In 2009, Konstantinos co-founded ERMA FIRST S.A. and he currently holds the position of the General Director.

One of his great achievements is the development of a Ballast Water Treatment System which makes use of active substances. The main aim of the project has been to research and develop methodologies and technologies for preventing the introduction of nonindigenous species through ships’ ballast water.

Some of the most important moments in his career were when he was on- site manager on the United Nations Development Program for the Oil Spill Cleanup of three sites between Jadra and Ras Al Saadiyat in Lebanon and on- site manager for the spill response caused from the cruise vessel Sea Diamond wreck.

Andreas Kokkotos holds a Mechanical Engineer diploma from NTUA. Previously to ARGO NAVIS, Andreas has worked from 1998 until 2005 as a superintendent engineer in two (2) Greek ship owning companies, with fleets of tankers and chemical carriers and participated in on-site newbuilding supervision in two (2) tankers newbuilding projects in Croatia for Greek ship-owners. From 2006 until 2008 he worked as an independent Engineer conducting pre-purchase, vessel condition and damage surveys, new buildings sea trials supervision for various types of vessels and participated in tanker single to double hull conversion studies and plan approvals of various types of vessels.

ZontanosAndreas Zontanos holds a Naval Architect and Marine Engineer diploma from NTUA, and a M.Sc. Degree in Precision Engineering Metrology by Cranfield University, Cranfield, UK. Nikos Kyritsis, Technical Product Manager, ERMA FIRST S.A.

Nikos holds BEng in Mechanical, production engineering & management and Msc in automation systems from NTUA. His field of expertise is design engineering and product development. Since 2003 he has been involved in various research projects in CAD, reverse engineering (point clouds or MRI data) related projects, and has experience in systems design, engineering and production. A unique panel of 12 experts presented latest updates surrounding the Ballast Water Management Convention, providing real life feedback and discussed all implementation issues. Following ratification of Indonesia, Morocco and Ghana, as of 30 November 2015, the BWM Convention has been ratified by 47 Member States representing the 34,08% of world tonnage. IMO Secretary General has recently announced that the Convention may enter into force worldwide from 24 November 2016 in case the updated figures of tonnage meet the ratification criteria. The event organized by GREEN4SEA and had ERMA FIRST ESK Engineering Solutions as lead sponsor. During his welcome address Apostolos Belokas, Founder & Managing Editor of GREEN4SEA, as the Event Facilitator, outlined the objectives of masterclass, including enhancing ballast water awareness and helping shipowners/ operators to take the right decisions now that the time has come for BWTS installations on board.

Presentations were given in two sessions as follows:

Session 1: Ballast Water Treatment Theoretical Aspects

  • Stamatis Fradelos, ABS, provided an overview of BWM legislation and timeframes for implementation.
  • Dimitris Dedepsidis, DNV GL, presented the main technologies of Ballast Treatment and share his insight on taking the right choice.
  • Dimitris Tsoulos, Evoqua, presented the USCG type approval process and principles.
  • Apostolos Belokas, GREEN4SEA, analysed the VGP court ruling recent case and addressed PSC and human element issues related to the Convention.
  • Konstantinos Dimopoulos, ERMA FIRST, gave his feedback on BW filtration challenges and presented best practices
  • Efi Tsolaki, ERMA FIRST, gave her feedback on BW sampling challenges and presented best practices
Session 2: BWTS Experience Transfer and Lessons Learned

  • John Kokarakis, Bureau Veritas, addressed the challenges in the Installation and Operation of BWTS
  • Konstantinos Stampedakis, ERMA FIRST, gave a presentation on BWT using fresh water
  • Andeas Kokkotos, Argo Navis, covered the retrofit study challenge from the class approval and installation drawings scope
  • Andreas Zontanos, Argo Navis, focused on the retrofit works specification by providing generic examples and referring to the 3D technology
  • Markos Vekris, OCEANKING, presented challenges and lessons learned as a maker during BWTS retrofit process
  • Nikos Kyritsis, ERMA FIRST, gave a presentation on BWTS installation and operation from Maker’s perspective
  • Theo G Baltatzis, Technomar Shipping S.A., provided his real life feedback on BWTS from Ship Manager’s perspective
All sessions ended with a round table discussion and exchange with the audience.
