2021 SMART4SEA Virtual Awards

SAFETY4SEA is delighted to announce the SMART4SEA Virtual Awards for the fifth consecutive year within the scope of fostering Smart Excellence & Sustainable Shipping. The process to be employed is a combination of open nomination and vote while the presentation shall take place at a dedicated special event to be held on February the 17th, at the opening of the SMART4SEA Virtual Forum.

SMART4SEA E-Navigation Award
To be awarded to any organization that provided a significant achievement, breakthrough or contribution in any aspect of e-navigation in shipping.

The shortlisted nominees are:

  • KILO Solutions Ltd., for its VASCO tool
  • Northsouth Maritime Co Ltd, for outstanding performance in e-navigation
  • NOVELTIS, for its enovOcean tool
  • ONE SEA – Autonomous Maritime Ecosystem, for driving for an autonomous maritime system by 2025
  • PortXchange, for its innovative digital platform that connects port communities worldwide


SMART4SEA Connectivity Award
To be awarded to any organization that provided a significant achievement, breakthrough or contribution with respect to ship connectivity.

The shortlisted nominees are:

  • Danelec Marine A/S, for its ‘DanelecConnet and Vessel Remote Server (VRS)’
  • Inmarsat,  for initiating the ‘Open Innovation Challenge’
  • StratumFive Ltd, for its ‘Podium’
  • Thome Group, for supporting connectivity throughout its operations amid COVID-19
  • Wärtsilä, for its ‘Navi-Port’


SMART4SEA Energy Efficiency Award
To be awarded to any organization that provided a significant achievement, breakthrough or contribution in any aspect of energy efficiency in shipping.

The shortlisted nominees are:

  • Marorka, for providing effective solutions of performance management
  • V.Group, for its ‘ShipSure’
  • Wärtsilä,  for ‘Fleet Operations Solution (FOS)’
  • WinGD (Winterthur Gas & Diesel), for its ‘Intelligent Control by Exhaust Recycling (iCER)’
  • ZeroNorth, for its ‘Optimise’


SMART4SEA Cyber Security Award
To be awarded to any organization that provided a significant achievement, breakthrough or contribution in any aspect of Cyber Security in shipping.

The shortlisted nominees are:

  • CyberOwl, for its ‘Medulla’
  • Korean Register, for issuing the world’s first Cyber Security (CS Ready) class notation
  • Marlink, for its ‘Cyber Detection’ service
  • Phish & Ships Maritime Cyber Newsletter, for offering free monthly maritime cyber security updates
  • V.Group, for building a cyber safety culture


SMART4SEA Training Award
To be awarded to any organization that provided a significant achievement, breakthrough or contribution in any aspect of Training with respect to smart shipping.

The shortlisted nominees are:

  • KILO Solutions Ltd, for developing ‘VASCO’
  • SEABLY, for providing a training platform for shipping companies
  • Thome Group, for its training system
  • University of Plymouth, for launching the ‘Cyber-SHIP Lab’
  • Wärtsilä, for its ‘Wärtsilä Cloud Simulation’


SMART4SEA Technology Award
To be awarded to any organization that provided a milestone technological achievement or breakthrough or significant contribution in any aspect of smart maritime activity.

The shortlisted nominees are:

  • Airbus, for its ‘STYRIS®’
  • ClassNK,  for its ‘Innovation Endorsement’ service
  • ERMA FIRST ESK Engineering Solutions S.A., for providing real-time monitoring and intelligent data analysis on the cloud for the first Smart BWT System
  • ST Engineering, for its ‘Maritime Anti-Piracy System (MAPS)’ software


SMART4SEA Personality Award
To be awarded to an individual that provided industry influence and contributed towards smarter shipping.


SMART4SEA Leadership Award
To be awarded to an individual that has provided industry leadership and contributed towards smarter shipping throughout his/her career.


Awards are subject to the following procedure, terms and conditions.

Nomination and Voting Procedure:

  1. Notification procedure is initiated few months ahead of the event with an open invitation to the industry stakeholders to propose nominations on the web. Nominations are valid only with an online submission completing the form below and can be made by any individual involved in shipping, limited to one nomination per category per person. All nominations MUST be in English language and provide a clear indication of the reasons behind the nomination (as appropriate).
  2. SAFETY4SEA Editorial staff will review all nominations for validity in line with rules, terms and conditions announced and place all valid nominations to the website for the online Open Vote in line with the deadlines announced.
  3. For each category winner will be the nominee that has attracted the most votes by the end of the voting period. Only one vote per person per category will be allowed.
  4. Awards shall be presented to winners at a dedicated special event to be held on February the 17th, at the opening of the SMART4SEA Virtual Forum.

Terms and Conditions:

  1. Nominations: 2021 SMART4SEA Virtual Awards are open for nominations till Friday, 4th of December 2020. Valid nominations will be reviewed by the editorial staff and put to online open vote on events.safety4sea.com, supported by social media and e-mail campaigns.
  2. Eligibility: Only work or achievements taking place within the last 18 months (2020-2021) will be eligible. Each nomination to meet the award description and specified entry criteria.
  3. Online Open Vote Procedure: Only one vote is accepted per award category. Vote will be open till 15th of January 2021.
  4. Awards Announcement: Awards shall be presented to winners at a dedicated special event to be held on February the 16th, at the opening of the SMART4SEA Virtual Forum.
