5th SMART4SEA Virtual Awards
The winners of this year’s SMART4SEA Awards were announced at a special virtual ceremony which took place on Wednesday 17th of February, 2021. The awards focus exclusively on initiatives and individuals who foster Safety Excellence & Sustainable Shipping, following a combination of open nomination and audience-vote.
SMART4SEA E-Navigation Award
Winner
PortXchange
For providing digital solutions that support the shipping industry in reducing its carbon footprint. Its innovative digital platform connects port communities worldwide to streamline their operations and reduce emissions from the maritime logistics chain.

SMART4SEA Energy Efficiency Award

For the launch of ‘Intelligent Control by Exhaust Recycling (iCER)’. This is the first development to be introduced as part of X-DF2.0, WinGD’s second-generation dual-fuel engine platform with the aim to slash methane emissions and cut fuel consumption.

SMART4SEA Cyber Security Award

For its ‘Cyber Detection’ service which scans network traffic for any targeted threats that may put operations at risk. All outbound and inbound network traffic is monitored and customers can view threats affecting their vessels through a web-based Cyber Dashboard.

Marlink firmly believes that looking at the vessel holistically to make sure that we both care for the safety aspects of crew and operational communication but also on the IT and OT side is mandatory for going forward. SMART4SEA Training Award

For its ‘Wärtsilä Cloud Simulation’ which overcomes COVID-19 restrictions to support seafarer training. The new solution has allowed instructors to deliver training courses to student-seafarers studying at any remote location..

For leading a giant organization such as V Group towards digitization and recognizing at the same time the role of the seafarer, leading industry efforts during recent pandemic.

Mr. Graham Westgarth is a man of character, a person of influence, a voice of reason with care and thought for the future. The CEO of V.Group has a long-distinguished track record in the maritime sector and has served several highly regarded positions in the industry. He has been the leading industry voice in prioritizing seafarers as key workers and supported V. Group resilience program called ‘keeping things in perspective’’ among other initiatives.

I would like to mention seafarers in particular and the need to have them globally recognized as key workers. V.Group, along with many others, have been working to have this status accepted and while we have been had some success, there is much still to be done. Supporting the many efforts towards will continue to be a top priority for V.Group.

For his contribution to smarter shipping, leading a key player such as INMARSAT and the industry in general in this smart shipping revolution over the course of recent years.

Leadership is the art to translate the unknown into reality, to lift people’s side into high levels, raise performance and build their personalities beyond their normal limitations. Mr. Ronald Spithout masters the art of people, providing a platform to develop ideas that do work. The President of Inmarsat’s Maritime business is a seasoned professional with a record of accomplishments and a passionate innovator who never stops exceeding possibilities to redefine what it means to stay connected in the open water.

Digitalization is happening already for a while but if the pandemic that we have around us is doing anything here, it is that it accelerates new ways of working. All stakeholders are now using more and more applications and different styles of working to not only survive in these difficult times but also strive and keep their companies afloat, making them more profitable. Also, the fact that digital services and applications are used for the social and mental wellbeing, gives me a lot of joy in this journey towards a smarter future.

SMART4SEA Awards are part of the SMART4SEA Forum within the scope of fostering Smart & Sustainable Shipping. The process to be employed is a combination of open nomination and vote. The award categories are:
SMART4SEA E-Navigation Award
To be awarded to any organization that provided a significant achievement, breakthrough or contribution in any aspect of e-navigation in shipping.
SMART4SEA Connectivity Award
To be awarded to any organization that provided a significant achievement, breakthrough or contribution with respect to ship connectivity.
SMART4SEA Energy Efficiency Award
To be awarded to any organization that provided a significant achievement, breakthrough or contribution in any aspect of energy efficiency in shipping.
SMART4SEA Cyber Security Award
To be awarded to any organization that provided a significant achievement, breakthrough or contribution in any aspect of Cyber Security in shipping.
SMART4SEA Training Award
To be awarded to any organization that provided a significant achievement, breakthrough or contribution in any aspect of Training with respect to smart shipping.
SMART4SEA Technology Award
To be awarded to any organization that provided a milestone technological achievement or breakthrough or significant contribution in any aspect of smart maritime activity.
SMART4SEA Personality Award
To be awarded to an individual that provided industry influence and contributed towards smarter shipping.
SMART4SEA Leadership Award
To be awarded to an individual that has provided industry leadership and contributed towards smarter shipping throughout his/her career.
Notification procedure is initiated few months ahead of the event with an open invitation to the industry stakeholders to propose nominations online via relevant form at dedicated awards page. Shortlisted nominees are announced within a week after nomination submission is concluded and open vote to declare the winner of each category is available for a period of three months through relevant application at dedicated awards page. Winners are announced during the welcome reception & award ceremony, the evening ahead of the SMART4SEA Forum.
